Laura A. Brown
Oil painter and gallery founder.
A native of Marblehead, Brown, has been a life long oil painter. She graduated from Danbury High School in 1976 and from Bowling Green State University in 1981, paying for her education by operating a charter fishing service on Lake Erie.
With best friend, Sandee Abele, she opened the first Desdemona's in Bassett's Plaza in 2006. The shop was a popular success but closed after four years due to Sandee's retirement. Brown then opened in a new location spending the next two seasons in the plaza with Allure Printing and The Canoe Club.
When her daughter, Bailey VanKirk, (an exceptional painter herself), along with her husband, wanted to move back to the peninsula Desdemona's current incarnation was born. They purchased the charming century old building with the storefront down and their home upstairs.
These days Brown's studio is in the home she shares with her husband, writer D'Arcy Egan and their German Wire Haired Pointer, Desdemona, (who goes by Dezzie). She has happily turned over the running of the business to her talented, energentic daughter.
